Proctology is a special branch of medicine that focuses on treatment for colon, rectal, and anal disorders, such as hemorrhoids. MaoHao “Charlie” Han, MD of Advanced Gastroenterology & Surgery Associates is a board-certified general surgeon who also specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hemorrhoids and other anal and rectal disorders. He commonly performs hemorrhoid procedures such as infrared coagulation and hemorrhoid banding. Learn more about these hemorrhoid treatments below.

Infra-Red Coagulation (IRC)

Infrared coagulation (IRC) is the most widely used office treatment for hemorrhoids and is preferred over other methods because it is fast and virtually problem-free.

A small probe contacts the area above the hemorrhoid, exposing the tissue to a burst of infrared light for about one second. This coagulates the veins above the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrink and recede. You may feel a brief sensation of heat, but it is generally not painful.

IRC is an outpatient procedure that does not require anesthesia or sedation.

Hemorrhoid Banding

Rubber band ligation is one of the most effective treatments for internal hemorrhoids. A viewing instrument (anoscope) is inserted into the anus, the hemorrhoid is grasped with an instrument, and a small rubber band is placed around the tissue above the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply.

The hemorrhoidal tissue and band slough off a few days later and the sore that is left will heal. You might experience mild discomfort and slight bleeding from this treatment.

Rubber band ligation is an outpatient procedure that can be performed in the doctor’s office and does not require anesthesia or sedation.
